Native of Scotland, born four miles from St. Andrew’s Golf Course in 1888; first and longtime golf professional at Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, starting there in 1922; worked as pro, groundskeeper and bookkeeper for 38 years; taught golf instruction to Mount Holyoke College students; joined PGA of America in 1927, played in the PGA Championships and U.S. Open; Western Mass. Tee Party honoree in 1958; once shared course record of 66 at Orchards GC; ran club’s caddie program; one of 12 children, played semi-pro soccer; joined the Army during World War I; wife Mary “Minnie” Fox, with three children; passed away in 1967.
