New Jersey native, 93, known as “pioneer of modern turfgrass research,” for efforts to run industry conferences and engineer fund-raising; taught turf management at UMass for 40 years; earned master’s degree and doctorate at UMass; very active with regional and national turf-grass organizations; chief petty officer in U.S. Navy during World War II; Hadley resident for 51 years now lives in Florida; approaching 70th wedding anniversary with wife Lonnie; two daughters, with four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
