One of best local amateur golfers of any era; seven-time men’s club champion at Ludlow CC; won Wethersfield (Conn.) Invitational and competed at 1949 National Club Champions Tournament; won prestigious Gold Star tournament five times and six Nathan Bill titles, as well as June Invitation singles crown in 1953; known for hitting straight drives and playing with a pipe in his mouth; won multiple; caddies as youth at Quaboag CC, where he once shot a 62 and won 15 club championships, and Franconia GC ; also won more than 20 four-balls in New England.
